17 Pygmies - Jedda By The Sea LP

Don't think I've seen this one on any blog lately. Here's the first full lenth of 17 Pygmies and second release. The first is the Hatikva 12". Has been re-released on CD in the 90's but is out of print now.
Can be considered as a Savage Republic (who split up for the first time) album as 2 members are responsible for a lot of tracks, Bruce Licher and Mark Erskine. And Robert Loveless and Philip Drucker were also Savage Republic members. Actually tracks 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 & 12 were originally performed by Savage Republic, but never released before.
A lot of variety on the album: ethereal pop to tribal percussion to soundscapes.
17 Pygmies are still going and have a myspace page here.
My copy is the German pressing. Originally released on Resistance Records. Sleeves of the original issue are all handpainted.

Nice, I'm certainly going to download this one. I really enjoyed the Hatikva 12" (especially Lawrence of Arabia) and like their choice of theme. Thanks.

Well, I really don't consider "Jedda" a SR lp...it seems funny now but the straw that "broke the Republic's back" was the inclusion of violins on Moment In Ceylon. Bruce and Mark thought it sounded like (and I quote) "old people music" while Robert Loveless and myself thought differently. Thanks for the kind words though...-PD

Hello Philip, I don't consider it a Savage Republic album too as it sounds quite different. It's just that both bands almost have the same personnel. Thanks for leaving a comment here.

Thanks for posting this! I'm looking forward to hearing it. I recently discovered 17 Pygmies while looking for Savage Republic LP's at a record store. I bought Captured In Ice and I'm really enjoying it.

Glad to see this wonderful album getting the love it deserves. I purchased the original way back when, taped it, took it on all my travels, and am listening to that tape today, 25 years later.

It is as strong today as it was back then.

Well, this post was interesting, but I would like to read something else, like what was the last record in Germany after 1984?

Very nice album. Do you know if the Savage Republic tracks that featured on this lp are the band's original versions, or where re-recorded by 17 Pygmies for "jedda"? Thanks.
