Modern English, Cold War, Secession

Here's the first part of singles that Lo Spettro Di Se Stesso sent me.

First one is the very first single of Modern English. This one was released on Limp Records before they signed to 4AD. I only own the 'Mesh And Lace' album, so I am interested in hearing the other early singles.

Modern English - Drowning Man 7" (Limp Records-LMP 2-1979)
1. Drowning Man
2. Silent World

Modern English

Second contribution is the sole release of UK band Cold War. Don't have any further info. Namedrop Records was run by Paul Platypus of 12 Cubic Feet, Exhibit A and Doof.

Cold War - The Machinist 7" (Namedrop Records-NR 4-1983)
1. The Machinist
2. Illusion

Cold War

Third contribution is the first single of Secession. Another UK synth band I know nothing about. Later they signed to Beggars Banquet. Don't know if their later stuff is also interesting.

Secession - Betrayal 7" (The Garden Label-GAR 1-1983)
1. Betrayal
2. Reflections

Secession

thanks for the modern english single... mesh and lace is quite fantastic. have you ever given after the snow a proper spin? some stellar songs there, too, though albeit not AS good.

the rest looks tasty too. thanks.

Have all three Modern English releases--it is a shame their one Pop hit has masked proper recognition....

Secession were the poor man's New Order, as I recall. Their single "Touch" is a dead ringer for New Order. Nice blog!

thanks so much for the modern english gift, good stuff. Have you ever listened to pulp's early singles, like Turkey Mambo Mama? Even though they don't sound at all a like it reminds me of the same sort of thing, post-punk before they were pop.

As far as Secession being a "poor man's New Order", New Order might have learned a thing or two by listening to Fire Island and Touch (two of the greatest synthpop singles ever) instead of that weak crap New Order kept peddling through the mid eighties and beyond. CN
