V/A Bites & Stabs LP

 First comp. album released on Torment Records, the label of The Second Coming. A collection of bands from Surrey and the area around.
As with all compilations, this one has outstanding stuff and less interesting ones.
Party Day, The Second Coming and Silent Scream are the best ones here and you can find all their other releases in my archives. Monk De Wally De Honk and Fractured Echo (track taken from a 3-track 7") are OK too. Don't care too much for the other bands.
The second comp. "Torn In Two" will follow soon.

Yeah Yeah Noh - Cutting The Heavenly Lawn Of Greatness...Last Rites For The God Of Love LP

Probably posted elsewhere but here's a quality rip from pristine vinyl of the sole full length album of Yeah Yeah Noh.
I think I've read somewhere that John Peel was a bit disappointed with this album, being a big fan of the band. It's a quite long album and maybe Yeah Yeah Noh works better in small doses on 7"/12", but you need to listen a few times to this record to fully appreciate it.
The album has some known songs as 'Temple Of Convenience', a re-recorded 'Prick Up Your Ears' and 'Starling Pillowcase', and 'Home-Ownersexual' which is another version of 'Another Side To Mr. Quill'.
The album contains two covers, 'Susie's Party' and 'She Said She Said'.
The 'Fun On The Lawn Lawn Lawn' album which is a compilation of Peel sessions is the only record I don't have of Yeah Yeah Noh. Hopefully one day...

This weekend's offer is a collection of 3 singles of UK bands Party Day, I'm Dead and Spot The Dog.


As promised, here's the first 7" of Party Day. 'Row The Boat Ashore' was re-recorded for the 'Glasshouse' album. 'Poison' is an exclusive track. Comes in a red cloth cover with insert (scanned).

Next one is the sole 7" of I'm Dead. A bit of a cult band. Had a hard time finding a copy. Great gothpunk. The band also have a track 'Page After Page' on a split flexi with punkband Epidemic, released by Grim Humour fanzine. On the back of the 7" it states that there's also a 6-track tape. Fritz once sent me a file he found with 11 tracks. So I guess they did some recordings for comp. tapes as well. But I don't know which tracks are on the tape and where the other tracks come from. Member Keith Goldhanger played later in Bastard Kestrel and Headbutt.

The last one is the only 7" of Spot The Dog. Sorrow-Vomit pointed me out on this one as he found out this is actually the band before Diatribe, who released a 12" on Criminal Damage. Nothing groundbreaking here. 'Toy' is the best track IMO.

The Second Coming - 7"/12"/Comp. Tracks

A few months ago I could finally obtain the very rare 'The Return' 12" of The Second Coming so now I can offer a complete The Second Coming discography.
The Second Coming was one of the goth-tinged postpunk bands from Barnsley besides Party Day and The Silent Scream.
The Silent Coming did their first gig in Leeds with Creatures Of Habit (later Tea House Camp). They used to practice in a community centre but had to play gigs for the kids there.
Their first release was the 'Incest/Faithless' 7". They made up a controversy about this record as the Royston Comprehensive School choir are singing on 'Faithless' while having the track 'Incest' on the flip. So they told a local reporter that lots of people were complaining about the single. But nothing about it was true.
'The Return E.P.' 12" was the band's second release. A double A-side 12" single that comes in a textured sleeve.
Another 4 tracks appeared on the comp. albums 'Bites & Stabs' and 'Torn In Two' of which I already posted the best tracks from.
All records released on Torment Records of which I think was run by the band itself.
Frontman Dean Peckett later joined Party Day. Drummer Dean Ormston also played in The Silent Scream. Look into my archives for Party Day and The Silent Scream.

The Second Coming

Party Day - Simplicity LP

Last release of this excellent Barnsley band Party Day. 'Simplicity' was released in 1986 on their own label. Original guitarplayer Martin Steele already left the band and Dean Peckett of The Second Coming took in his place.
There's an untitled track on the end of Side B which sounds very different from the rest of the album. Sounds more like a traditional or so...
The single record left not posted is the first 7" 'Row The Boat Ashore'. This one will follow very soon.

A Collection Of Tracks

My last post before a short summer break. Here are some tracks that are missed on some anthology CD's or taken from compilations.

Ausgang - Solid Glass Spine
Taken from the double A side 7" Strip Me Down/Solid Glass Spine. This track doesn't appear on the Ausgang anthology CD.

The Danse Society - The Theme
Long, atmospheric track that appeared on the 12" version of 'Somewhere'. Doesn't appear on the 'The Seduction' CD which compiles all early and best releases. Two other songs were left out: 'There Is No Shame In Death' and 'Dolphins' but you can find that 12" on Wiel's Time Capsule (see link in sidebar)

Vex - Rushing To Hide
This track appears on the 'We Don't Want Your Fucking Law' comp. album released on Fight Back, a sublabel of Mortarhate.

Party Day - Borderline
This one appears on the 'Bites & Stabs' comp. LP released on Torment Records. Not featured on any other Party Day release.

Silent Scream - Shimmering
Also from the 'Bites & Stabs' comp. LP. Sounds quite different to their 7". Vocalist Anton and the keyboard player left the band so the bassplayer took over the vocals.

V/A Raging Sun LP

Probably the very first release on Leeds label Rouska Records. A lot of diverse stuff on this one here.
The first 2 tracks are Mel-O-Tones related I think. Some tracks have already been issued on other releases like the ones of Shop Assistants, The Inca Babies, Bogshed and Party Day (title track of their 2nd 7"). Spig is spoken word.
I know of 2 different sleeves of this record. I think my copy is the most common one. There's no release date mentioned but I guess it was released in 1985.

Good Morning Mr. Presley

Well here's probably my last post for this year.
The 'Good Morning Mr. Presley' LP was released on Grunt Grunt A Go Go in 1985 (I think). It's a record that is not easy to find these days. It's like a cross section of UK indie bands from that period. Most bands appeared on labels like Abstract, Backs and In Tape. Some of the bands ring a bell like The Bomb Party, Marc Riley, Microdisney but there seems to be a few bands that only appear here as far as I know.
The record contains 2 live tracks: the one of Five Go Down To The Sea ? and one of The Botha Boys, who are no one else than The Three Johns off course.
Every compilation is a bit of a hit-or-miss so it's up to you which tracks you favour.
The Grunt Grunt A Go Go label only released 2 albums: this one and the 'It's My Dog, Maestro' LP of Eton Crop (Dutch band and friends of The Three Johns).

Party Day - Glasshouse LP

Here's another long forgotten wave band. Party Day were from Barnsley (same city as The Danse Society) but I don't know when they actually formed but I guess around 1981. Their 1st 7" 'Row The Boat Ashore', was released in 1983. In 1984, the band released another 7" called 'The Spider'. Next one is the 'Glasshouse' 12". This record was issued on Rouska Records, contrary to all the other records that were self-released.
The 'Glasshouse' LP was issued in 1985 and it's a great record IMHO.
Party Day released another album 'Simplicity' in 1986 before falling apart.
